Mellor Olsson partner receives 2016 Brian Withers award

Philip Page, partner at Mellor Olsson and Chair of the Law Society’s Property Committee, received the Brian Withers award at the Law Society’s annual awards dinner on Friday 5 August 2016.

Philip has been a Member of the Law Society since early 1973, a Member of the Law Society’s Property Committee since the early 1980s and has held the role of Chair for the past 15 years.  Philip also acts as Deputy Chair of the Law Council of Australia’s (LCA) Australian Property Law Group, a national body.

With the Real Property (Electronic Conveyancing) Amendment Bill 2016 coming into force earlier this year, South Australia has undertaken the most dramatic changes to conveyancing practice since the first Real Property Act began in the 1860s. Over the past 18 months, Philip has represented South Australia on the LCA’s National Electric Conveyancing System Working Group and led the development of the Law Society’s educational materials and forms about the new Act. He has also delivered a number of industry seminars, written articles for publication and overseen updates to Members about the changes.

On behalf of the Law Society, he regularly liaises with the Registrar-General, Lands Titles Office, Australian Institute of Conveyancers SA and the Real Estate Institute of Australia. Philip contributes to the Property Law Reform Alliance, which is working on a proposed Uniform Torrens Title Act, and represents the Society on a “Stakeholder Reference Group” convened by the Department of Treasury and Finance after the announcement the Lands Services group/Lands Titles Office was to be privatised.

Commenting on the award, David Caruso, Law Society President said, “Philip’s service to the Society has been immense, but he never seeks to be exalted, and is the type of person who would never expect or covet such an award. But it is only right that we sing his praises and recognise the work he does, day in day out, for the benefit of the legal profession.”

About the Brian Withers Award

Established in 2005 and named after His Honour Judge Brian Withers, an active proponent at both State and Federal level for more than 30 years, the award recognises a Member of the Law Society who has provided outstanding service to the Society, its members and the profession, above and beyond the call of duty.

Council members submit nominations for the award which are then reviewed by a panel comprising the President, the Chief Executive and Judge Withers.
